Exceptional Services By Working Together

About Us

The Service Commission’s mandate includes providing services for the development, planning of regional recreation initiatives, including common or regional sport, recreational and cultural facilities; and the facilitation of administrative, financial and other service arrangements. Some of these initiatives include coordination of recreation development, asset and trail mapping, facility and program inventory and capacity assessments, recreation needs assessments and recreation master planning.
The Commission’s vision is that everyone in Southwest New Brunswick is engaged in meaningful, accessible recreation experiences that foster individual and community well-being, and the well-being of our natural and built environments (adopted from Pathways to Wellbeing: Framework for Recreation in Canada). The Service commission serves members who live in Charlotte county and a small portion of York county, which includes McAdam, Harvey, St. Stephen, Saint Andrews, Campobello, Grand Manan, St. George, Blacks Harbour, and all of the Rural Local Service District communities.
The Southwest New Brunswick Service Commission (SNBSC) has completed a Regional Recreation Master Plan following a 2-phase study.  First, a recreation asset inventory was compiled, mapping Southwest New Brunswick’s recreation assets–places used by the public for leisure such as trails, arenas, sports fields, pools, parks and beaches, playgrounds, golf courses, tennis courts, curling clubs, and skateboard parks.   In the second phase, the inventory was used to develop a plan that looks at recreation planning from a regional perspective, highlighting both built and nature-based recreation opportunities.  The Regional Recreation Plan includes an enabling action plan with short, medium and long-term priorities for recreation development in the region.

Looking Ahead

The Southwest New Brunswick Service Commissions has been the entity through which Municipalities, Rural Communities and Local Service Districts have come together to identify and reach consensus on the need and the scope of recreation services, including assessments of the major facilities that support recreation activities in the region. The Commission is responsible for facilitating the planning, development and administration of a Recreation Master Plan policy for the region, as well as a possible cost-share and recreation auditing framework of major sport and recreation facilities.
